He eats wood, carpet, wires, etc.

I have an 8 month old chihuahua and I love him to death. He's about 4 pounds and I've had him since he was 3 months and 1.7 pounds. Overall, he's a great dog; but let's just say the honeymoon phase is over. Potty training went out the window awhile ago - I think he only goes on the potty pads because he thinks it's something he's not supposed to go on, and he doesn't go on them very often. When I catch him going on the carpet I put him on the potty pad and he just shakes and stares at me until I walk away - then he runs to the hallway and finishes what he started; I'm about to put him in diapers! He finds random pieces of wood and chews on them, I don't really care about that except I'm concerned that it could hurt him since he's so small. Wires are a new thing - my roommate was the victim as Max decided to not just chew but shred through wires to a speaker system. I'm sure he's only alive because they weren't plugged in. The one that I'm completely baffled by is the carpeting - a patch probably 4" by 5" not just shredded, but completely gone. How does a 4 pound dog do this? Really, any advice would be helpful because he's about to buy a one-way ticket to anywhere but where he currently is.

ahh, yeay for puppies and puppy training!!! (i'll be your cheerleader for a min) :)

I have learned that crate training is best, for your own puppy's safety. If you are totally against it, research it. If not, then listen. I have 2 shih tzus who were getting into things when i was gone, and after 2 trips to the emergency vet for one of my dogs always choking on something and barely breathing when I got home, i looked in to it. And honestly, i'm not going to say they love it.. but it is there place of comfort. They make a little home away from home in there crate, and now when they are sick or if they get in trouble they will go sit in their crate with the doors open. So, its not punishment, its there little room. I leave mine 8-12 hours for work and if you set up a system(take them out right when you walk in the door) they will also begin to potty train themselves. For your lil puppy kid, i would definitely suggest shorter intervals, and a couple of trial runs (while you run errands, or even while you are in the house so you can make sure he cant harm himself at 1st). Anyhow, most dogs dont like to urinate where they sleep, unless its an emergency, so they will typically train themselves to hold it till you get home.. Just be thorough and systematic... Good luck, hope this may have helped.
